New Beginning, Same Result

Unless you have been under a rock - or counting on my blog to supply you with all your Rocky Mount news (my bad) - then you know BW Holt retired and Dickie Shock is the new head coach of the Gryphon football team.

The biggest question I have fielded since Coach Shock has arrived on campus has been if the offensive scheme was going to remain the same. I believe I can answer that question with an emphatic YES!

The Gryphon offense sliced and diced there way through a burly Northern Durham defense and emerged victorious by a score of 30-14. The game was played Saturday night at Durham County Stadium due to a nasty line of storms in the area Friday night.

On Saturday evening, the Gryphon rushing attack came out and provided the thunder with Marquavis Alston and the lightning with Jordan Ford. The backfield duo, who combined for over 2,200 yards as juniors in 2008, picked up right where they left off with each rushing for over 100 yards in the contest. While the offense was not as flashy as in seasons past, it methodically moved the ball and in the end produced five touchdowns.

Quarterback Collins Cuthrell showed a lot of poise under center as he began his second season as the Gryphons' starting signal caller. He converted two big fourth down plays with QB sneaks and drilled a big fourth down pass to keep a scoring drive alive in the 2nd half. Collins showed a greater maturity coming into the season. He was a leader in the summer workouts. In between his duties as a starting infielder for American Legion Post 58, Collins spent his free time getting together with receivers and backs and putting in extra work. I expect to see Collins continue to improve as his receivers get more reps and Coach Shock's offense takes hold.

The Gryphon defense looked good considering that only two guys had starting experience. Linebacker Carter Varnell is the unquestioned leader of the defense and he showed from the get go why he is. If you see the Gryphons in person this season, just keep you eye on #33. You will more times than not end up on the ball.

The Gryphon D did an admirable job of defending the Northern Durham spread offense. Considering it was the Gryphons first game of the season, and the second for ND, the results were very favorable. I don't believe we will see too much more of the spread this season, even though word out of Hertford County is that the Bears are now running a spread variation. RM heads to Hertford County on September 11, so we will see soon.

The game also marked the return to the airwaves for AM 1390 Sports coverage of Gryphon Football. Tony Doughtie and myself enjoyed being able to bring everyone who couldn't make the trip the details of Coach Shock's debut. At this point, we have a good core of sponsors on board and we are looking to add more. Stay tuned for what will be a great season for Rocky Mount High School.

Back for another season is our Pizza Inn Player of the Game award. We would like to give a big thank you to Craig Johnson at the Pizza Inn on Hunter Hill Rd. for his support of the program. This week's winner is Marquavis Alston. Marquavis led the Gryphon ground attack with 22 carries for 123 yards. He found the end zone 3 times. The three TD's added to Alston's school record for touchdowns scored. That record now stands at 45. This week against Northampton-East, Alston should break the school's career rushing record. He needs 22 yards to accomplish that record. Congratulations to Marquavis Alston, our Week 1 Pizza Inn Player of the Game.

We will be back on the airwaves Thursday night September 3 as the Gryphons play host to Northampton-East. The game will be at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. The Batts Batts and Bell Pre-Game Show starts at 6:30, kickoff is at 7:00. Talk to you later...

The Champs Are Here

The Rocky Mount Gryphon baseball team knows a thing or two about playing under pressure.

The spring of 2008 proved that.

The Gryphons' parlayed the No. 2 seed out of the NEW 6 Conference into the school's fifth state championship by sweeping through the Eastern 3A bracket and then taking two of three games from East Rowan.

Those two days at Zebulon's Five County Stadium will live in the hearts and minds of Gryphon fans forever. And the piece of jewelry you see to your left is just a little reminder of those days.

The 2008 team solved the puzzle.

The 2009 team will do their darndest to figure it out for themselves. And they started the season as the hunted. Pre-Season polls had Rocky Mount ranked No. 1 in the state 3-A ranks (Impact Baseball) and ranked No. 33 nationally (PGCrossChecker.com). Through six games, the Gryphons have lived up to the hype. The only blip is a 5-4 nine-inning loss to 4-A power JH Rose. The Gryphons hold wins over South Granville (2), Roanoke Rapids (2) and Independent power Wesleyan Christian.

The Gryphons return five starters from the '08 squad that set school records for games played (33), wins (27), runs (239), hits (nearly 300), and batting average (.324). But the four they lost were major contributors.

Gone are stalwarts Jim Leggett, Grant Johnson, Chris Berry, and William Barringer. Leggett (an All-State selection) holds the school record for wins (28) and Berry is tied for the school record in RBI (66-tied with Jeremy Ward). Barringer's knack for the big hit will be sorely missed, as will Johnson's penchant for always making the right play. These guys were all three and four year starters that as seniors led their team to a 27-6 record and of course the 3A State Championship.

But as we all know, time goes on, and a new band of Gryphons' will look to make their mark on the Rocky Mount record book.

L to R: Ben Fish, Brian Goodwin

The Gryphons will be led by senior CF Brian Goodwin. Brian, who has signed a letter of intent to the University of North Carolina, is not only one of the top players in the state, but one of the top players in the country. Impact Baseball has him rated the No. 2 player in North Carolina while Baseball America ranks him No. 10 nationally. Perfect Game USA has him No. 15 nationally. In 2008, Brian batted .473 with 15 doubles and 4 triples. He stole 21 bases and scored an amazing 45 runs. That was enough to garner him All-Conference and All-State honors as well as NEW 6 Conference Player of the Year. He set single season school records for hits, doubles, and runs scored. Over the summer, Brian kept busy by playing in the AFLAC All-American Game at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium (where he took home MVP honors) and the Under Armour All-American Game at Chicago's Wrigley Field. Brian is on pace to set six school career records and has started the season well. A player like Brian Goodwin is a once in a lifetime treat for fans. Come out and see him this season and maybe someday you'll tell your grandkids that you saw greatness.

Senior Catcher Ben Fish returns from his All-Conference performance last season to guide the Gryphon pitching staff. In his junior campaign, Ben batted .402 with 5 home runs, 11 doubles and 38 RBI. One of the top uncommitted seniors in the state, Impact Baseball ranks him the #37 prospect in the 2009 senior class. Ben hit his first home run of the season against South Granville a couple of days ago and has really been ripping the cover off the ball early on for Rocky Mount. While Ben has not yet committed to a college, he is getting plenty of looks and has some offers on the table.

The Gryphon pitching staff was a big question mark with the loss of Jim Leggett. But I think they have a pretty good answer with junior left hander Hobbs Johnson coming into the fold. Hobbs and his family made the decision to transfer to Rocky Mount after two successful seasons at Rocky Mount Academy. Hobbs led the Eagles deep into the NCISAA 2A playoffs last spring and over the summer committed to pitch for the University of North Carolina. He was a member of Post 58 and was the best pitcher on that club over the summer. Hobbs also pitches for the highly competitive Dirtbag program in which many of the top players (including Brian Goodwin, Ben Fish, and Northern Nash's Tyler Joyner) participate. Hobbs already has 2 wins on the season as well as a save for the Gryphons. The sky is the limit for the future of Hobbs Johnson.

Rocky Mount's pitching staff also includes returning sophomore Benton Moss who notched seven wins as a freshman in 2008. Those wins included the second game of the Eastern Finals over DH Conley and the clinching third game of the state championship series vs East Rowan. Benton has already racked up a win and a save on the season and has been solid playing some left field for the Gryphons. Other pitchers who will see time are Sr. Dillon Cockrell and Sr. Nick Hahula. Both of these guys have one victory apiece on the mound and will be counted on heavily to provide pitching depth. Jr. Parker Helms could also see time on the bump after being one of the top pitchers on the JV team last spring.

Cockrell is in his fourth season as Rocky Mount's starting shortstop. He had a fantastic playoff run last season, especially with his glove. Dillon has showed improvement every season since starting as a freshman. He has started the 2009 season on a hitting tear, already with multiple multi-hit games. Dylan and returning starter Sr. Gabe Brown form a nice double team duo in the middle of the infield and provide a punch at the bottom of the Gryphon batting order. You look for these two guys to score a lot of runs, especially with someone like Goodwin batting lead off.

The final returning starter is Jr. third baseman Collins Cuthrell. Cuthrell solidified the hot corner midway through the '08 season and provided great glove work on the state title run. Cuthrell has shown a lot of improvement over the summer and into the spring at the plate. He is currently batting third in the order and is getting into a nice groove. With guys like Goodwin on base ahead of him and a stick like Ben Fish hitting behind him, Cuthrell will have ample opportunities to come up big this spring.

With the loss of Chris Berry, the Gryphons needed a big bat to fill the middle of the order. They didn't have to look far as Sophomore Thomas Berry has stepped right in where his older brother left off. A big left handed batter, Thomas has a great knack for making HARD contact with the ball. He is one of those guys who you don't want to miss an at-bat. Look for big things to come as Thomas continues the family tradition.

Other names you will hear this season include Senior Chris Pittman, Juniors Carter Varnell, Michael Whitehead, Spencer Bell and Brandon Amerson. Pittman has been in the DH/LF rotation and has a lot of potential as a batter. Varnell started the season in RF and remains in the mix for the starting job. Whitehead, Bell and Amerson all provide depth while Whitehead and Bell both got the start against Roanoke Rapids Thursday and played well.

What really sets Rocky Mount apart from other teams in the area and the state in the man wearing the No. 20 on his back. Gryphon head coach Pat Smith is one of the most successful coaches to ever put on the uniform in this state. Before coming to Rocky Mount, Coach Smith won a state title as a player at Robersonville High School in 1967. He won a state title as head coach at South Johnston in 1990. In his sixth season at the helm of the Gryphons, he brought Rocky Mount it's fifth state championship (1963, 1967, 1973, 1980). Coach Smith is a stickler for the fundamentals of the game, but has a unique way of communicating with this generation of ballplayers.

In the off season, assistant coach Jason Battle stepped down from his post. Hank and Tom Jones are filling the roles of assistants for the '09 team with a blend of knowledge, excitement, and an all around love of the program. Without a doubt, we are lucky to have these guys in the dugout.

Thus far, the Gryphons are off to a good start at 5-1. A big win over Roanoke Rapids Thursday (11-1 in 5 innings) has the Gryphons living up to the lofty expectations. Rocky Mount will play this Saturday (3/21) at Wilson Hunt. The game is scheduled for 2:00. My personal computer has been messed up for the past couple of months and therefore the blog has suffered. I'm hoping to have it back working in the very near future and hopefully we can get back to some of the things that had you, the readers, excited about getting online. E-mail me with any questions or comments you might have (blackbirdxpress@yahoo.com).

I look forward to seeing everyone at the ballpark this spring. Stop by the press box and say hello to the AM 1390 Sports Dog, Bella the Bulldog. She is the official Press Box Dog of Rocky Mount Baseball (one of her many roles).

Have a great weekend everyone...

End of an Era

"Two or three plays in a game spell victory or defeat; you never know when that play is coming up." - Vince Lombardi

Friday night, the Rocky Mount Gryphons were on the wrong side of that quote. And because of those two or three plays, the Gryphons' playoff run ended in the Eastern Finals for the second consecutive season.

With the loss, 25 seniors took off their blue jerseys for the final time. It was a senior class that put up numbers that have never been seen at Rocky Mount High School. Their final two-year record was 27-3, 28-2 on the field. As seniors, they scored the most points in school history. They set the school record for total offense in both of their seasons. They produced the school's all-time leading scorer. They produced the Twin Counties' top single-season receiver. They won two NEW 6 titles. They had two appearances in the Eastern Finals.

Below are most of the seniors of '08 and a little about each.

* #1 Josh Boulware: Josh was ineligible as a junior, but as a senior, the young man made up for the year he missed. Playing linebacker, he made bit hit after big hit and was a big reason for the success of the D-Block.

* #3 Keith Strickland: Keith set the Twin Counties' single-season receiving record in 2008 with 1,135 yards. Keith was a two-year starter at WR.

* #4 Hiawatha Bunn: Few people handle pressure as well as Hiawatha Bunn. How many positions has he played in two years? Whether it be wingback, quarterback, safety, or cornerback, Bunn responded to the task. Injuries slowed him down, but nothing could stop him.

* #9 Nick Harrison: I called him one-half of the best defensive end duo in the state and my opinion goes unchanged. A young man with tremendous heart and a non-stop motor, Nick led the team in sacks in '08 and recorded three alone in the third-round game vs. Eastern Alamance. He was a two-year starter at DE.

* #20 L'Var Silver: L'Var also was ineligible to play as a junior, but made a big impact as a senior. The young man ended up running for over 600 yards while splitting carries at the fullback position. He provided the 'lightning' at the FB position, showing speed that was not there before.

* #22 Zach Williams: Zach stepped it up at the cornerback spot this season, routinely shutting down his side of the field each game. Zach was injured in the Eastern Alamance game and unable to play Friday night.

* #24 Brian Goodwin: "The Showstopper" as he was dubbed in the radio booth, Brian was a special player. Blessed with insane athletic ability and a penchant for the spectacular, Brian changed other teams game plans. He was one of the most dangerous kick returners in the state and a blur from the safety position. During the season, Brian signed to play baseball at the University of North Carolina.

*#41 Chris Pittman: As fine a young man and as fierce a competitor as you will ever meet, Chris directed the D-Block from his linebacker position. And if you were crazy enough to come over the middle or pick his hole to run through, that was your problem. Chris epitomized "Bringing the Wood" with huge hit after huge hit. It was pure joy to watch #41 play.

* #42 Dedrick Silver: Manning his safety position, Dedrick was in on plays a safety should never sniff. With a nose for the ball and a 'No Fear' attitude, Dedrick was one of the Gryphons' leading tacklers in '08.

* #44 Nick Hahula: The Swiss Army Knife of football players. A throwback kind of guy. Gritty is an understatement. Nick had a sensational career in the blue and gold. He holds the school scoring record and every kicking record in the book. Nick's career will not be defined by its last few moments, but by the four years of blood, sweat and tears this young man left on the field. It just won't be right not seeing Nick Hahula on Friday nights. A four-year starter on varsity, he played in 53 games - tied for most all-time.

* #50 Whit Barnes: Whit was an All-State center on the Gryphon offensive line and he lived up to it. The Wake Forest recruit helped the Gryphons establish school records for total offense every season he was on the line. He played through injuries and never missed a beat. Whit was a three- year starter on the varsity line.

* #51 Darryl Cross: Darryl never started at Rocky Mount, but his impact was felt. On the defensive line and at linebacker, he made the most of his time as one of the Gryphons top backups. Just take a look at his helmet and you will know he took his work seriously.

* #53 Brandon Dennis: The word we used for Brandon was 'cerebral.' The young man was one of the smartest players on the team. At his guard position, he helped pave the way for two 1,000 yard rushers in '08. With his mix of strength and intelligence, he was an anchor for two seasons on the RM offensive line.

* #54 Greg Williams: 'Frost', as he was known by everyone, was a big guy who did big things. A guard with a nasty streak, Frost was a ferocious blocker who loved nothing more than to put defensive lineman and linebackers on their butts. A two-year starter, he will be remembered as much for his big heart as for his big hits.

* #55 John Wells: John was not the biggest or quickest defensive tackle, but he may be one of the toughest. At 5'9'', 215 pounds, he was routinely out sized, but was rarely outplayed. Forming the guts of the D-Block, John lived up to his responsibilities with his big plays and good head for the game. He was a two year starter on the defensive line.

* #56 Chris Driver: Chris was a key reserve on the offensive line. The quintessential team player, Chris could play any line position and filled in admirably when some starters missed games this season.

* #62 Torey Lee: 'Pork Chop' is the only name you need to know here. It was said by more than one coach that Chop was the best pound-for-pound player on this football team. A phenomenal blocker, Chop was the guy who would be ten yards down field of the play opening up the running lanes for Gryphon backs. While undersized for an o-lineman at 5-11 and 255 pounds, he played like he was 6-6, 300 pounds. He played at an All-State level all season and if he ends up playing anywhere at the next level, someone will have a heck of a ballplayer on their hands. Chop was a three year starter on the varsity line.

* #66 Josh Thigpen: Josh provided the meat in the middle of the Gryphon defensive line. Coming up with play after play when teams tested the RM middle, Josh was a big key to the D-Block success on the year.

* #75 Jarron Battle: The only new starter on the offensive line in '08, Jarron jumped right in and started dominating with the rest of the group. The smile on his face hid the love for doling out punishment on defensive ends and linebackers.

* #90 Jermaine Fields: The heart and soul of D-Block, Jermaine was the vocal leader of one of the best Rocky Mount defenses ever. A great blend of size and speed, Jermaine made quarterbacks think twice about rolling out of the pocket. A vicious tackler, Jermaine was second on the team in sacks and was near the top in fumble recoveries, while being near the top in tackles as well. A two-year starter at defensive end, Jermaine had a great career.

You may look at that group and say what will RM do in 2009? Well, the cupboard is not bare. Rocky Mount will be returning two 1,000-yard rushers in Jordan Ford and Marquavis Alston. Quarterback Collins Cuthrell returns under center. Linebacker Carter Varnell (Friday's Pizza Inn Player of the Game) will lead the next installment of D-Block.

I will leave you and the 2008 football season with another quote from Vince Lombardi: "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

To the 2008 seniors, thank you for never giving up. You are a special group that I will always remember. It was a privilege to be able to cover you and broadcast your games. Good luck in whatever the future brings you.

To our readers and listeners, thank you for letting us into your lives at least once a week for the past four months. We look forward to being back and better than ever next season on AM 1390, Your Home For Rocky Mount Football.

Friday Night Lights

There are four teams remaining in the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs. Two of those teams are undefeated on the field this season. Those two will face off Friday night for the Eastern Regional Championship.

Rocky Mount.

West Craven.

After Friday night, one will realize the dream of playing for a state championship. The other will be left with nine months of "what could have been".

For the Gryphons, this will be the final home game for a group of seniors who have taken the program to heights no seen in a generation. With a victory, they will have the chance to fulfill a destiny that was predicted when they walked off the field at Western Alamance last December. With a win, a legend will get his first shot at the ultimate goal.

One game. In the words of legendary Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, "Just Win Baby!"

Let's take a look at the Gryphons' opponent for Friday night, the West Craven Eagles.

WC Offense:

If you are a fan of throwing the football, you have found your team. West Craven is home to one of the state best passing attacks. Head Coach Clay Jordan has crafted a versatile attack that can turn short throws into long gains or stretch the field at will. An offense that has scored 515 points on the season (an average of nearly 37 points per game) is led by the states leading passer, #4 Senior QB Brett Mooring. Mooring (6'4'' 220 pounds), leads the state in passing yards with 3,565 yards. He 228-377 on the year and has 33 touchdown passes against only 8 interceptions. His QB rating is 111, about as well as you will see from a high school QB. Mooring also has the most rushing attempts on the team with 90 for 249 yards and 12 TD's. This is not an offense that relies much on the run, as there are no players with 300 yards of rushing. With his size, Mooring is very dangerous on short yard attempts, especially inside the 5-yard line.

Mooring's favorite target is #15 Senior WR Erik Highsmith. Highsmith (6'2'' 180 pounds) is third in the state in receiving yardage with 1,272 yards on 71 catches. The University of North Carolina commitment has 13 TD's and is one of the best athletes in the east. Highsmith is far from West Craven's only receiving threat. #9 Junior WR Ryan Murphy is also in the top dozen in the state in receiving yards. Murphy (5'7'' 151 pounds) runs fantastic routes and catches anything that comes near him. On the season, Murphy has 65 catches for 1,077 yards and 7 TD's. #1 Junior Justin Hardy (5'10'' 156 pounds) has added 47 catches for 772 yards and 7 TD's while #8 Junior Chris Person has 25 grabs for 336 yards and 3 TD's.

The running game is used more to keep defenses honest. #5 Junior RB Tyree Dawson (5'5'' 140 pounds) is a classic scatback who leads the team in rushing with 294 yards on 70 carries. #22 Senior Jamel Meadows (5'10'' 166 pounds) is second on the team in rushing TD's with 9, but has only 258 yards on 57 carries.

WC Defense:

A defense that has surrendered 173 points on the season (just over 12 points per game) is led by #24 Senior OLB Justin Bryant. Bryant (5'9'' 170 pounds) leads a fast group of linebackers, who love to fly around the field, with 109 tackles and 4 sacks. #21 Senior MLB Jaquan Cruoell (6' 211 pounds) has racked up 59 tackles to go along with 6 sacks on the season. The defensive line is anchored by a pair of good defensive tackles, #65 Junior Kevonte Staten (6' 280 pounds) and #67 Sophomore Tormel Murriel (6' 230 pounds). Staten has 49 tackles and 3 sacks while Murriel 56 tackles to go with 5 sacks. #6 Senior DE Derrick Hill (6'1'' 180 pounds) is second on the team in tackles with 70 and leads the team in sacks with 9.

The defensive backfield is a ballhawking group with 25 interceptions on the season. #15 Highsmith (who doubles as a DB) and #20 Senior SS Roderick Cox (6' 170 pounds) each have six picks on the year. #2 Senior Bobby Cox (5'11'' 170 pounds) has added four. They are a quick group who loves going after the ball.

WC Final Analysis:

These have been the two best teams in Eastern North Carolina since Day 1. They are the only undefeated teams left in the 3A bracket. This game was meant to happen. And it happens on the biggest stage Friday night can set. West Craven will try to come out and set a tempo they like to play at. They will bring an air show the Gryphons have not seen this season, or in any in recent memory. Wins over Kinston, SouthWest Edgecombe (twice), New Bern and JH Rose have these Eagles flying high.

I believe Friday night will be an eye opener for both teams. For the Gryphons, an attack that can't be duplicated on the practice field. For West Craven, team speed that they have never seen. I believe in the end, the Gryphons' speed and level of physical play will spell the end of West Craven's dream season. The NEW 6 is the most physical conference in eastern 3A. It has prepared Rocky Mount well. When West Craven feels the force the Gryphons come out with, I think it will be said and done. Rocky Mount wins, and don't be surprised if they win by a lot. This is the year Rocky Mount fans. The year the Gryphons head to the state title game. The year we officially put the Western Alamance curse to bed. The year that these seniors have worked for. The year that an old legend finally coaches on the last Saturday of the season. A year to fulfill a destiny.

We will kick off the Batts Batts and Bell Pregame Show at 6:45 Friday night. Just after 7:00, we will have an interview with Gryphon head coach BW Holt. Then we'll take you up to kickoff for the Eastern Finals. You can catch it all on Your Home for Rocky Mount Football, AM 1390.

Sitting Down With The Gryphons: Volume 6

I sat down with Rocky Mount's record setting wide receiver Keith Strickland for this editon of "Sitting Down With the Gryphons". We talked about the Gryphons' playoff run, this Friday's Eastern Final against West Craven, and Keith's latest record, the Twin County single-season receiving yardage record.
